If you're a fan of abandoned car dealerships, we have bad news for you. The site of the abandoned Hyundai dealership on Savannah Highway will now be the home of a new hotel and convention center. Developers plan to build a seven-story, 200-room boutique hotel, alongside a 10,000-square-foot convention center and commercial areas lining Savannah Highway. Developers and supporters of the project claim the site will bring tens of millions of dollars to the local economy as well as create a large number of jobs. Those against it point out how the site will affect traffic on the already congested highway, and that one more hotel is the last thing the city needs. Located just near the end of Interstate-526, the site will most likely rival the North Charleston Coliseum due to its proximity to the airport and interstate, though this may bring more events and conferences to Charleston now that there will be more space.
