NEXTON PART 1: BUILDING A TOWN

A few years ago, a huge dream of development came into reality with the groundbreaking of Nexton. The project had lofty goals in a location far from the Peninsula, but their recent achievements have proven the cynical wrong. Located between I-26 and Highway 17-A, the project seemed perfect on paper: until the factors of distance and traffic were taken into account. The location is Northeast of Summerville by roughly three miles, and the area had been mostly untouched by people until the groundbreaking. Although the official Nexton website advertises a 25-minute drive to Charleston, taking traffic into account it could be close to an hour. This isolation from Charleston was solved with a clever solution: building an entirely new town. Developers met the needs of the residents by building offices, restaurants, hospitals, and schools as well as a centralized downtown-like area. The choice to build an entirely new town is one that has huge effects on the population of the Charleston metro area, as well as the activity of those moving to it. Essentially, Nexton created an alternative to Charleston and the home market within it. The influence of the project on the Charleston home market will be further discussed in this series, and it will not be a series you want to miss.
